4 best holiday activities around town for kids

December 15, 2017

Unfortunatly mother nature doesnt always provide; and although it appears to be snowing pretty hard outside today there is no guarantee that the mountain will have much open in regards to trails. They are blowing snow like crazy, and with the new weather system moving in things are starting to look like winter finally, but what is there to do for kids around town besides the skiing?

Elephant Revival

The Sheridan Arts Foundation is holding a Holiday Concert series on Wednesday, December 27th through December 31. Elephant Revival, a Telluride favorite, will be playing on Friday and Saturday. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8. They are a very unique collection of multi-instrumentalists and have blended the elements of gypsy, Celtic, Americana, and folk. They preach on the importance of harmony among all living things. Music is a way to unite us all in a way that sometimes nothing else can. General Admission tickets are $40 and for balcony seating it is $55.

Purely Patsy, a natural cowgirl

On Thursday, the concert series hosts Dinner with Purely Patsy, a Patsy Cline tribute show which caters a southern-style meal to accompany your show. Pasty Cline will be there in all her glory and will share with you some of her songs as well as the stories behind them. Get to know this fascinating woman behind the western outfits in a way never before seen. General Admission tickets are $65 and that does include dinner and a seat at the table on the main floor. Balcony seats sell for $35 and does not include the dinner.

Telluride Outside

Another rare holiday adventure is to book a tour with Telluride Outside. Usually at this time of year they are doing snowmobile tours, but with the lack of snow they are still running daily jeep-tours up to Tomboy Mine. Located in Savage Basin far above Telluride (and the tree-line) is the old Tomboy Mine. They began producing gold ore in 1894 and are at 11,509 ft. It can be difficult to hike to this elevation, but with a jeep-tour there is no need to worry! The history of this old colorado ghost town is fascinating, and remnants of the history are obvious when you get up there. My first thought was whoa, this looks like it used to be a city. Much larger than the town of Telluride. And it was, you can still see the old main street through the center of the town although most of the buildings have collapsed or burned down over the years. Millions of dollars in gold was pulled out of these mines before the Rothschilds bought it in 1897, and was one of the only mining towns with a YMCA and tennis courts. For the full Telluride experience, this old ghost town of a time past is a must see. Believe it or not, during the height of the gold rush, there were more millionaires living in Telluride than New York City. Call now for reservations at 800.831.6230, they are even still offering fly fishing excusions for groups of all ages and skill levels!
