Being Smart About Avalanche Safety In Telluride

February 28, 2019
2019 is proven to be one of the deadliest avalanche years in recent memory. In fact, in the last two weeks, two men have died in the Telluride backcountry.

Often when we see headlines such as “avalanche at Telluride,” we can’t help but think the avalanche occurred within ski boundaries. This is almost never the case, though. Instead, the majority of fatal avalanches occur when the backcountry is involved.

Telluride and all of Colorado have had above-average snowfall for the season — this makes in-bounds skiing at Telluride all the more fun, and out-of-bounds skiing all the more dangerous.

If you’re planning a trip to Telluride and want to tap into the backcountry, the Telluride Avalanche School offers guided tours and courses.

Avalanche School

The Telluride Avalanche School offers one four-day course, two three-day courses, and one two-day course on avalanche safety in the winter. The organization also offers free courses on Monday nights as part of the Monday Night Avalanche Awareness Forum Series. Additionally, you can opt for the level 1 course or take AIARE Avalanche Rescue for a more advanced option.

Courses follow the American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE), so participants receive a certified completion certificate.

Backcountry Ski Excursions

If you’re drawn to the backcountry but worried about the safety concerns, joining a Backcountry Ski Excursion could be a great option for you. The Telluride Avalanche School offers guided excursions to untracked powder. Plus, these guided tours give you a chance to practice touring and learn the basics of route finding, avalanche awareness, and rescue protocol.

You can choose between private half-day and full-day adventures, or you can opt for a group rate. Either way, you’ll be along for an adventure with experienced Telluride guides.

Other Adventures

If you’d rather not venture into the Telluride backcountry during avalanche season, the group also hosts ice climbing adventures, winter hut trips, and snowshoe tours. There’s an adventure for everyone!

Whichever adventure you opt for, make sure to follow safety precautions and to go with an experienced guide when you have the chance.
